  1. Great review. I completely agree with the critic that the film goes beyond the dictates of realism to a world of symbols and gestures. I've always put forth the notion that Lucas first stressed in early interviews which is that the film is not realistic. It is NOT how things were but how we wanted them to be. I believe the film is, in many respects, a revisionist view of late-50s-early 60s youth culture. It utilizes icons such a rock n roll, cars, hair styles to symbolize the time period but doesn't necessarily depict an honest representation of the world or history. And, that's okay with me because that's what makes Graffiti a fantasy world that I and others want to return to again and again.
