Creem - 1973 Feb. Chuck Berry's Back From The Blues

I just heard we lost Chuck Berry today. I was thinking about it and I remembered the 1973 Creem Magazine that had him as the cover art. So I pulled it out and there it is on the cover it says "Chuck Berry's Back On Top". An article that I have never read. I bought the magazine because it had an movie review of American Graffiti in it.

Now I normally only post articles on the movie the cars or cast but tonight while listening to some Chuck. I realized he might not have appeared on screen but he was in the movie. Maybe I have just watched the movie one too many times but I can't hear Almost Grown with out running Terry's lines.

"What a Babe.... What a Bitchin Babe" (squealing tires around the corner) "Um Hello.... Buenos Noches?? ..Uhh  look you sure you don't need a lift somewhere? Huh.. Hey Do you know John Milner?? John Milners A Good Friend Of Mine"     and on and on.... O fine....

"Hey Did Anyone Ever Tell You That You Look Just Like Connie Stevens"

Or When I listen to Johnny B Goode. I hear "Hey You Got A Really Bitchin Car"  "Well ..Ya I Know"  "In fact Your Cars So Neat Were Gonna Give You Our Special Prize....You Want Me To Give It To Ya?"  "Hey Sweetheart If The Prize Is You I'm A Ready Teddy"  "We'll Get Bent Turkey"

 I can see Old Carol getting hit by that water balloon and hear her squeal and Milners laugh. Then I get this overwhelming urge to jump the fins of a 60 Caddy and I swear at the end of the song I can hear the coupe drive off??? Guess I have just been programed.

Crawdaddy 1973 November - George Lucas - American Graffiti

As I sort thru stacks of books and magazines hunting that next Graffiti jewel I have noticed a trend. The newer articles about American Graffiti seem to ask the same questions over and over and sometimes even quote incorrect "facts" from other articles. It is a shame when there are so many untold Graffiti stories out there and the real facts fade a little every day. I guess that's why I personally prefer the early stuff when the reporters asked good and interesting questions. . Now for some fresh facts from 1973. It's a great article back when they could get an interview with Lucas.

Ford Life 1973 - Those Old Photogenic Fords

Looks like Ford Life Magazine caught wind of Lucas filming the movie American Graffiti and using old Fords to do it. Not wanting to miss an old Ford in a movie they sent a reporter out to get the story. I guess the guys at Ford Life don't like Hot Rods? Making statements about Milners 32  coupe like " The car was (sadly) customized especially for filming" I wonder how they would write this article today??

Seventeen March 1973 - On Location with George Lucas

Thats right more vintage American Graffiti articles. This week I am bringing you back to 1973 for an interveiw with George Lucas in Seventeen Magazine.Who Says you can't stay 17 forever? As I read more and more of the older articles it is pretty cool how many little things you learn that they just don't cover in more recent articles. I still find it funny that as a child Lucas grew up on Ramona Steet (Carol's street in American Graffiti) and that his childhood phone number was 849-1138 or should I say "THX 1138"

Newsweek August 13 1973 - Drag-Strip Dance

Describing Wolfman Jack as "the father-confessor-guru deejay" and Paul Le mat (John) as "the drag king in his sawed-off green hot rod. I like reading the early articles. The later articles all seem to read the same. This one also delves a little deeper in to MacKenzie Phillips life and career.

Free Press...... I wish! Free equals disposable.  Seems like no one saved free papers so when you find one they are rare and depending on subject they can get expensive.

I must admit it's funny reading articles that came out before the movie did. Like when it says the name of the movie is "American Graffiti a name that name which may be canceled by the funding studio, Universal". Jeff

Film Heritage 1973-74 Vol.9 No.2 - American Graffiti

This week we travel back to 1973 with a team of women writers who give us a history lesson on the era when American Graffiti was originally released. It is an interesting overview of the time and the feel of our nation. The girls are pretty tough on our favorite little movie describing some of the characters as "The f#ckable blond with a heart of gold" or "The tee-shirted car freak with no future". I'll cut the ladies some slack on their review. No matter how many articles I read on American Graffiti I still find it interesting how different people see the film.
